Phillip Riley: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Phillip Riley has committed to Notre Dame. Today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Phillip Riley is a physical cornerback with strong technique. He has good size for the position and is a physically impressive prospect. Riley is able to overpower receivers at the line of scrimmage and has the technique to transition well and run with receivers downfield. He uses his size well at the point of attack and when the ball is in the air to put himself in good position to make the play on the ball. Riley has a good understanding of route concepts and does a good job of reading the receiver and getting in good position to make the play. He is a tough match-up for receivers in both man and zone coverage on the outside.
Riley is an asset against the run and is physical with blockers on the edge. He does a good job of finding the ball carrier in traffic and is a good tackler. Riley is not the fastest cornerback, but his technique makes up for the lack of elite long speed. He has good flexibility now, but will need to maintain that as he gets stronger in college to stay at cornerback. Overall, Riley is a strong cornerback prospect who shows advanced ability. Phillip Riley has the size and technique to succeed at cornerback and will be a starter for a power five team.
