Luther Burden: Scouting Report
Size
Luther Burden has good height at the receiver position. He has a good frame that he has already started to fill out. He has the length needed to extend and has a good catch radius. Burden has good size and will be a physical match-up for any defensive back.
Athleticism
Burden has good long speed, he can get behind the defense and make big plays downfield. He also shows the burst to gear up and get to full speed quickly as he runs away from tacklers. He also has above average change of direction skills that allow him to create separation and make defenders miss.
Route Running
Burden has the speed and burst to create separation downfield and is quick and physical enough to get open in the intermediate passing game. He needs to get better at maintaining pace through his breaks, but that should come as he develops the nuances of the position. Burden has little trouble creating space for him self as a pass catcher and will only improve at the next level.
Ball Skills
Burden does a good job of tracking the ball downfield and has the body control to adjust to the ball. He has good leaping ability and length giving him an impressive catch radius that vacuums up footballs in his area. Burden has good hands and catches the ball effortlessly. He is excellent in contested catch situations where he puts all of his ball skills to work.
Run After Catch
Burden’s athleticism, size and strength make him a dangerous weapon after the catch. He has a good feel for where defenders are around him and has an array of moves to make them miss. Burden does a good job of finding open space and getting up field. He is not as sudden after the catch as some of the more explosive college receivers but is dangerous with the ball in his hands.
Projection
Luther Burden is a size/speed mismatch at the receiver position that is difficult for defensive backs to handle. He has so many tools that defenses cannot game plan to take one part of his game away. With an array of skills at his disposal, he will become one of the best receivers in college football.
