LB Rankings: Drake Thomas

With the season underway players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Drake Thomas, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

You can view the College Football LB rankings here.

NC State linebacker, Drake Thomas flashed as a true freshman and grew into a larger role in 2020. In 2021 he has not only elevated his game to another level, but has been asked to take on more responsibility than ever with the injuries to Payton Wilson and Isaiah Moore. Thomas has taken on the challenge head on, recording 74 tackles with 7.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 pass breakups and 8 QB hurries in nine games this year. He has elevated his play on the field and filled the leadership void the injuries created for the Wolfpack defense.

Thomas is a powerful 6’0″ and 238 lbs. He plays with good leverage and powers through blocks to get to the ball carrier. Thomas has good balance and body control as he fights through contact, making it easier for him to finish the play. He understands how to take on half of the blocker and give himself the advantage against larger players. He has strong hands and a thick lower half that makes it easier for him to disengage and make the tackle. Thomas is a disruptive player who gets in running lanes and closes hard on the ball with relentless pursuit.

Thomas has also shown the ability to be an asset in coverage. He has good instincts for where the play is going and the ability to feel where receivers are behind him. Thomas displays good agility and balance when reacting to the ball. He is able to make plays on the ball and tip passes and even make interceptions over the middle. He has been asked to play in the middle of the field more of late and his instincts and coverage ability have been a bonus for the defense.

Drake Thomas is a high motor player who excels in pursuit. He is explosive in short areas and can beat blockers at the point of attack then close on the ball carrier. He has continued to add to his game over the course of his career and is showing how versatile of a player he can be for the NC State defense. Thomas has become a leader for the defense and an impact player on the football field. He has established himself as one of the better linebackers in college football.
