LB Rankings: Barrett Carter

As we review the LB rankings, players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Barrett Carter, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

• Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
• Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
• We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Clemson linebacker, Barrett Carter arrived at Clemson with the highest of expectations. He flashed as a true freshman in spot duty, showing the athleticism and play-making ability that made him such a highly touted prospect. As a sophomore he has taken advantage of the increased playing time to show the impact he is capable of. He made 65 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 6 pass break-ups, 2 fumbles forced, 2 interceptions and 6 QB Hurries over 13 games. Carter has the high end athleticism and instincts to be a star linebacker.

At 6’1″ 225 lbs, Carter has the explosive athleticism to close on plays in space. He is a player who excels in pursuit from sideline to sideline, finishing plays with a big hit. His play recognition helps him to react quickly and it doesn’t take long for Carter to get to the ball after that. His athletic ability in space alleviates the need for the Clemson defense to take him off the field in passing downs, allowing the defense to be versatile and adaptive. His burst and athleticism are rare for college linebackers and set him apart from the pack.

Carter capitalizes on his athletic gifts with his feel for the game. He reads the game well, putting himself in position to make plays. His knack for finding the ball shows up in coverage, forcing fumbles or reacting to misdirection plays. Carter is able to turn good plays into game changing plays thanks to this knack for finding the football. With his athleticism and big play ability, Carter is a nightmare for offenses to have to contend with.

Barrett Carter is a special athlete who can do a bit of everything at the linebacker position. He is excellent in pursuit, shows coverage skills to defend the pass and a knack for making big plays for the defense. He is an ideal defender against modern spread offenses that does not have to leave the field in any situation. Carter has quickly elevated himself among the best linebackers in college football.
