High School Game Review: Corner Canyon vs Bingham
High school football kicked off this weekend and with several games being televised we were able to get a look at some prospects. Here are our thoughts on the prospects we saw in the Corner Canyon vs Bingham game Friday night.
Top Prospect
Jackson Light is a 2021 center prospect who is committed to Oregon. Light is a strong well built prospect who is an imposing player at the high school level. He plays both offense and defense for Corner Canyon and had a major impact on both sides of the ball. Light was able to bully the defensive linemen at the line of scrimmage and open up holes in the running game all night. He does a good job of sealing defensive lineman off to one side and opening up a running lane for his quarterback or running back. He showed good burst and was able to get to the second level when needed and was an effective blocker downfield. Bingham rushed three players most of the night and Light held up well one on one on the interior in pass protection which allowed his team to double team both ends.
On defense, Light played defensive tackle and held up well at the point of attack. There was a noticeable difference in Bingham’s inability to run up the middle with Light in the game as opposed to when he was on the sideline. He used his hands well and got good penetration several times recording at least two tackles for loss on the game. Light dominated the game on both sides of the ball and was a key part of Corner Canyon’s ability to pull away Friday night.
2022 Prospect Who Shined
George Maile is a 2022 guard prospect for Bingham who has offers from Nebraska, Oregon, USC and Utah among others. Maile is an athletic prospect who still has a lot of room to add weight and get stronger. He plays tackle for Bingham and has good feet at the position. He sets himself well in pass protection and delivers a good punch to the pass rusher. He was not beaten in pass protection all game. Maile does a good job of climbing to the second level on run plays behind him and is athletic enough to find and block second level defenders. He showed the athleticism to pull and lead runs to to the opposite side of the formation as well. The only play Maile was beat on was a quarterback draw where he allowed the defender to counter back inside and make the play. Maile showed his potential as an excellent offensive guard prospect throughout the game.
Committed 2021 Prospects
Viliami Pouha is committed to Utah in the 2021 class and plays defensive end for Bingham. He is an edge prospect who is still rather slender and will need to get bigger in college. Pouha showed a good first step and speed but because Bingham was rushing three most of the night he was double teamed often. On the rare one on one opportunities he had Pouha won with speed and quickness. He did record a sack later in the game on a one on one opportunity. Pouha beat his man back inside on a counter move and closed on the mobile quarterback quickly to record the sack. There were times when Pouha got caught too far upfield and left the defense susceptible to quarterback draw plays.
Tupou Maile is a 2021 defensive end for Bingham who is committed to Utah State. He plays opposite Pouha and appears to be slightly bigger at this stage. Maile was also double teamed most of the night due to Bingham’s three man rush against the pass. Maile is not as quick or fast as Pouha but did show a good punch at the point of attack. He needs to develop as a pass rusher but shows the tools to be an effective player when he gets a one on one matchup. This was not the best game for Maile and Pouha to show what they can do as Bingham was dropping too many players in coverage to counter Corner Canyon’s passing game.
2021 Prospects Who Are Not Committed
Jaxson Dart of Corner Canyon is a 2021 quarterback prospect who currently has offers from BYU, Louisianna and Utah State. Dart had a great game Friday night throwing for six touchdowns in the game. He demonstrated good arm strength and zip on his passes, throwing an effective deep ball and displaying excellent accuracy underneath. Dart was well protected most of the night and demonstrated a good understanding of his offense. Most of his throws were outside the numbers but his was very effective finding his receivers on the outside. He made good throws when on the move as well, and was able to present a good running threat throughout the game. Dart is a clever runner with good mobility, he makes defenders miss and picks up chunks of yardage in the run game. Dart had a good showing on national television and has potential as a quarterback prospect.
Isaiah Glasker is a 2021 WR prospect for Bingham who currently has an offer from BYU. He is a tall prospect who still needs to fill out some. He made a few catches in the game included a late touchdown where he got behind the Corner Canyon defense. Glasker has decent mobility for a receiver but showed good hands and body control throughout the game. He made a nice catch on a jump ball between defenders but the safety was able to push him out of bounds on the play. Glasker was an effective and willing blocker downfield on perimeter run plays. He did fumble on a wide receiver screen play but had a solid game overall.
