Greg Penn III: Scouting Report

Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, Greg Penn III committed to LSU, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.

Greg Penn III is a downhill linebacker who makes plays behind the line of scrimmage regularly. He is a well built linebacker prospect who will continue to add weight in college. He is a force against the run where his instincts and reactions allow him to fill lanes quickly and blow plays up in the backfield. Penn uses his hands well to keep blockers from getting to his body and disengages to make the play on the ball carrier. He has good closing speed, filling the space between himself and the ball carrier in a hurry. He also has good speed for the position and makes plays pursuing the football from sideline to sideline. He is a good tackler who does a good job of squaring up ball carriers and finishing the play.

Penn is not as a adept defending the pass as he is defending the run. He needs more experience and better technique when taking his drops and attempting to fill passing lanes. He is more comfortable and fluid coming forward than dropping back from the line of scrimmage. These are things Penn can work on with experience as he is asked to do them more. Greg Penn III is a quality linebacker who should rack up tackles as a starter at the power five level.
