Gentry Williams: Scouting Report
Size
Gentry Williams has average height at cornerback. He has the frame to add some weight but has a leaner build. Williams has the height to hold his own on the perimeter and will be strong enough to handle most college receivers.
Athleticism
Gentry is an excellent athlete with plenty of speed to track receivers all over the field. He is a fluid athlete with the change of direction skills to shadow receivers. Williams has explosive acceleration and will close on plays in an instant.
Hips/Technique
Williams played the majority of his high school reps at quarterback, so his experience at conerback is limited. He does have the fluid hips to turn and run effectively with receivers. His physical skills help him mirror receivers though his technique will need to be honed at the next level. He shows good spatial awareness in zone coverage and anticipates throws well.
Ball Skills
Williams has good ball skills. He does a great job of tracking the football and putting himself in good position to make the play. Williams has the body control to adjust to the ball and times his jumps well to make the play. His ability to play the ball will only improve as he gains experience.
Physicality/Tackling
Williams may not be a big cornerback, but he is physical at the line of scrimmage and will jam receivers. He will need to get stronger as he fills out which will help him take on blockers on the perimeter in run support. Playing defense full time will help him become a consistent tackler.
Projection
Gentry Williams is an explosive athlete who has the tools to be a quality cornerback. He shows good ball skills and the raw skill set to develop into an excellent cover guy. Williams has the athleticism college teams are looking for and will develop into a starter for an upper echelon power five team.
