Derek Wilkins: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, Derek Wilkins committed to Cal, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Derek Wilkins is a player with good height and length, that is well put together for the high school level, but still has plenty of room on his frame for additional muscle mass. Wilkins plays with a tremendous first step and flashes plus athleticism. He is not the smoothest athlete, but his pursuit and change of direction skills are plenty impressive. Holds his own at the point of attack and has no issues setting the edge as a run defender.
His hand usage is phenomenal for the high school level as he shows an array of pass rush moves including a speed rush and dip, swim move, and the beginnings of a push and pull move. He shows an innate understanding of how to setup his pass rush moves and his timing makes him even more effective. Wilkins is relentless in his pursuit of the ball carrier and plays with the effort and energy you love to see. His athleticism flashes multiple times on special teams, where he gets in the backfield quickly to block kicks. Derek Wilkins is an excellent prospect that projects as a defensive tackle or 3-4 defensive end, with the potential to be an impactful starter at a premier power five program.
