Deion Smith: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Deion Smith is committed to LSU, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a scouting report based on his film.
Deion Smith is a tall, fast receiver who is an excellent deep threat. He has good height and length but is very thin right now, though he has some projection in his frame. Smith has good speed and good acceleration to go with it, he is able to get downfield quickly and gets behind the defense. Smith does an excellent job of tracking the ball and uses his length and height to win in jump ball situations. He has long strides and is able to cover a lot of ground in a few steps. Smith is more nimble than you might expect for a player with his size and stride. Smith has subtle agility and can make defenders miss in the open field. His combination of speed, explosiveness and agility helps him to be dangerous in the return game as well.
Smith is more physical than you would expect from a player who is still rather thin. He is a willing blocker and does not shy away from contact downfield. Nonetheless, Smith will need to get bigger and stronger in college to deal with more physical defensive backs. He also will need to get better in and out of his breaks running routes downfield. Overall, Smith has good length and downfield speed that allows him to be a big play receiver. Deion Smith is tall receiver with good athleticism who will be a big play receiver on the perimeter for a top tier college football team.
