Week Four Stars, 2022
Every week is a new opportunity for college football players to shine. Here’s a look at a few of the stars from week four:
RB – Blake Corum – Michigan
Michigan rolled through a fairly easy out of conference schedule, but faced an undefeated Maryland team Saturday. The Terps proved to be a tougher test, but Michigan was able to ride star tailback, Blake Corum, to a 34 – 27 victory. With Donovan Edwards out and the rest of the offense sputtering at times, Corum carried the load for the Wolverines and proved to be unstoppable. His offensive line was dominant opening up big holes, while Corum showed the vision to find them, then the speed and burst to take advantage for big gains. He carried the ball 30 times for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns against Maryland, accounting for more than half of the Michigan offense.

LB – Ivan Pace Jr – Cincinnati
Cincinnati ran away early and beat Indiana 45 -24 for a convincing home win. Ivan Pace Jr was all over the field for a Bearcat defense that dominated early and helped the team pull away in the first half. Pace showed plenty of range, but was especially disruptive in the backfield, getting consistent penetration and creating negative plays for the Indiana offense. He racked up 15 tackles, with 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 3 quarterback hurries. Pace has adjusted well after transferring over from Miami (Oh) and is proving he can be a play-maker for the Cincinnati defense.

WR – Troy Franklin – Oregon
Oregon won an entertaining shoot-out against Washington State 44 – 41 this weekend. For much of the first half Oregon moved the ball, but failed to capitalize on their opportunities, settling for three field-goals and throwing a pick six when inside the red-zone. The Oregon offense came to life in the second half with Troy Franklin playing a key role. He made four catches for 99 yards in the second half, including the go ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter from fifty yards out. Franklin finished the game with 5 catches for 137 yards and that critical touchdown. It was an explosive performance for the second year receiver who is becoming a featured piece of the offense.

QB – Adrian Martinez – Kansas State
We expected Kansas State to play Oklahoma tough, because that’s what the Wildcats do, but Adrian Martinez led his team to a thrilling 41 – 34 win on the road. Martinez transferred to Kansas State after a long run at Nebraska where he showed big play ability, but was plagued by turnovers. He played a great game on the biggest stage Saturday night, leading the way for the Wildcats to pull off the upset. Martinez made the play of the game on third and sixteen from his own 41 with a seven point lead in the fourth quarter. He stepped up in the pocket and took off running, weaving through the Oklahoma defense for a 55 yard gain that would set up a Kansas State score and seal the win. Martinez finished the game 21 of 34 passing for 234 yards with 1 touchdown and no interceptions, while also running for 148 yards and 4 touchdowns on 21 carries. He showcased all of his play-making ability on Saturday night, carrying his team to a big win.

DE – Zion Tupuola-Fetui – Washington
Washington has been waiting for star defensive end, Zion Tupuola-Fetui to return to form after an injury slowed him down all of last season. He finally looked like his old self in a 40 -22 win over Stanford on Saturday night. Tupuola-Fetui led a pass rush that pressured Tanner McKee and created turnovers in the backfield. He was responsible for a fourth quarter sack and fumble forced that would end any thought Stanford had of a potential comeback. Tupuola-Fetui finished the game with 4 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a fumble forced. The star defensive end was disruptive and looked like the player who wreaked havoc in 2020. His leadership on the defensive line will be a big part of Washington’s success the rest of the season.
