Tyreak Sapp: Scouting Report

Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Last winter, Tyreak Sapp committed to Florida, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.

Tyreak Sapp is a well built prep product who has well rounded athletic traits – showing good enough length, quickness, and flexibility (although he is not great in any category). Sapp plays with better leverage than most high school defensive linemen and is comfortable using his hands to fight off blockers. His aggressiveness and physicality pop on tape as he delivers punishing blows to blockers and ball carriers alike. Sapp is very good at locating the ball carrier, disengaging the offensive linemen, and making the play. His lateral mobility and ability to start and stop are tested often by the speed option on film and Sapp holds up well, displaying the change of direction skills necessary to disrupt the quarterback and pitch man. This is a valuable trait to have on the edge at the next level as modern defensive ends are often tested in space by zone reads and similar looks. As a pass rusher Sapp mostly relies on an outside shoulder bull rush and dip move which proves effective at this level. He is able to blow by most tackles and understands how to dip his shoulder as he bends around the corner towards the quarterback. There were some missed opportunities for sacks as Sapp did, on occasion, fail to make the play on the quarterback. Overall, however, there is not much concern with his tackling ability as Sapp does a good job of wrapping up ball carriers. This is a very good prospect with a high floor but a limited ceiling as he lacks the physical traits of elite edge rushers.
