True Freshmen Mountain 2020: October 14 Update
The True Freshmen Mountain is our way of tracking the impact college football’s newcomers are having. It’s like the game, King of the Mountain, the player on the top is King, and everyone else is doing their best to knock him off the peak. We will update the list every week adding in the performances from that week. The mountain is based on a players performance for the season. We are judging players based on their production, the level of competition they performed against and the eye test. To see last week’s true freshmen mountain click here.
King Of The Mountain
Myles Murphy – Clemson
Season Stats: 19 tackles 6 TFL 2.5 Sacks 1 fumble forced
Murphy played a big role in Clemson’s ability to contain D’Eriq King this weekend. He had 4 tackles in the game and was credited with a tackle for loss and half a sack. He was able to get past the Miami offensive line and put pressure on King consistently. Murphy plays on a talented defense but has been able to shine brightly despite the many stars around him, remaining at the top of the mountain.
Top Challengers
Deuce Vaughn – Kansas State
Stats: 50 car 238 yds 3 TD / 9 rec 279 yds 1 TD
With Skylar Thompson out, Vaughn struggled a bit for the first time since the season opener. He had 14 carries for only 43 yards and for the first time all season did not score a touchdown. He was able to get loose as a receiver once, gaining 45 yards on his one catch in the game. Vaughn is a versatile weapon who impacts the game in many ways making it difficult for defenses to contain him. Thompson will be out for the season so Vaughn will be counted on to make things easier for new quarterback Will Howard.
Stats: 46 car 232 yds 2 TD / 8 rec 146 yds 3 TD / 5 kr 137 yds
Gibbs had another good all around game on Friday night against Louisville. He ran the ball 13 times for 61 yards and scored the Yellow Jackets first touchdown of the game. He was equally effective in the passing game, catching 2 passes for 60 yards and another touchdown. Gibbs is adept as a runner and pass catcher, making it difficult for defenses to contain him. He is a slippery runner with good speed who can get free to make an explosive play at any time. He has been the Yellow Jackets most consistent offensive weapon.
On The Slope
Eli Ricks – LSU
Stats: 7 tak 2 PBU 2 Int
The LSU defense has struggled this year but Ricks has been a bright spot, both now and for the future. His ability to cover talented receivers on the outside has been an asset and the 2 interceptions are a sign of his playmaking ability. He only had 1 tackle against Missouri but was not a major culprit in the defensive struggles and continues to do his job. Ricks is part of the solution for LSU and should continue to play well.
Stats: 34 car 192 yds / 11 rec 84 yds
Bigsby burst on the scene in a big way this weekend. He got his heaviest workload of the season and responded with his best performance. The powerful runner proved difficult for the Arkansas defense to tackle, carrying the ball 20 times for 146 yards and catching 4 passes for 16 yards. The success should allow Bigsby to see more action and bring a steady running threat to the Auburn offense in the future.
Chris Tyree – Notre Dame
Stats: 25 car 188 yds 2 TD / 7 KR 158 yds
Tyree lost a good amount of time due to Notre Dame not playing for several weeks but definitely hit the ground running this weekend. He ran for 103 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries and returned two kickoffs for another 54 yards. He is an explosive player with the big play speed to break the game open. Tyree has forced himself into the running back rotation at Notre Dame and will continue to make impact plays on a weekly basis.
