Star Performance: Zach Evans
TCU’s Zach Evans emerged as the season progressed in 2020. He didn’t get many touches in week one due to the blowout nature of TCU’s win. The Horned Frogs needed their star running back to play a bigger role against California and he delivered with a big performance. Evans was explosive in TCU’s 34 – 32 win Saturday.
Evans closed the 2020 season with two 100 yard rushing games in his last three games. He averaged 7.7 yards per carry during 2020, showing glimpses of why he was one of the most sought after recruits in the 2020 recruiting class. On Saturday he proved he is ready to elevate his game to the next level this season.
Evans actually didn’t get going until the second quarter, but began to break off big runs midway through the second quarter. He showed a good combination of the speed, power and change of direction ability that make him such a dangerous runner. Evans’ effectiveness on the ground opened up space for the passing game and created running lanes for Max Duggan. Evans’ biggest run of the game came with 11 seconds left in the first half and the Horned Frogs trailing 20 -7. He shot through a hole in the middle of the line and weaved through the Bears’ defense for a 51 yard touchdown to close the gap before the half.
TCU continued to the rally in the second half and completed the comeback with a win. Zach Evans more than did his part, carrying the ball 22 times for 183 yards and the long touchdown. He added a 14 yard catch as well, nearly accounting for 200 yards of offense by himself. The star running back was electric and showed he will be a force to be reckoned with this year.
