Star Performance: Riley Moss
Iowa‘s Riley Moss has already established himself as one of the top cornerbacks in college football. On Saturday, he made his case for moving up that list while leading the Hawkeyes to a 34 – 6 win over Indiana. Moss was a key play-maker for an Iowa defense that made life miserable for Michael Penix and the Hoosiers’ offense.
On Indiana’s opening drive of the game, Moss set the tone for the Iowa defense. He intercepted a tipped pass to the outside and raced 30 yards to the end-zone for a defensive touchdown. The score opened up as 14 – 0 lead for Iowa and started an avalanche of momentum for the home team. Moss was not done with the Hoosiers yet.
Near the end of the first half Iowa held a 21 – 3 lead, but Indiana had the ball near midfield. Michael Penix decided to test Moss again with a pass toward the outside, but the star cornerback was ready for him again. Moss jumped the route, securing his second interception of the game and sprinted the 55 yards for his second touchdown of the game. With the way Iowa’s defense was playing Moss’ second pick-six put the game out of reach.
Moss accounted for two more pass breakups during the game, leading a pass defense that gave Michael Penix fits throughout the game. This was only the fourth time in Big Ten history that a player had two interception returns for a touchdown in a game. Moss led the way for an excellent defensive performance that turned a highly anticipated game into a blowout. He is off to a great start for his 2021 season and will look to continue his strong play the rest of the year.
