Star Performance: Matt Hankins

Iowa must have implemented a team rule for 2021 about cornerbacks intercepting two passes in a game. In week one it was Riley Moss, and in week two it was Matt Hankins who made the big plays in the secondary. Hankins’ two interceptions led a dominant defensive effort for the Hawkeyes as they beat Iowa State for the sixth straight time.

Hankins’ first interception came in the second quarter. Iowa State held a 3 – 0 lead and started the drive deep in their own territory, on first down Brock Purdy took a deep shot down the middle of the field. Hankins had excellent coverage one on one against Xavier Hutchinson and won a jump-ball to secure his first interception and give Iowa the momentum. The Hawkeyes took over near midfield and would score their first touchdown of the game on the ensuing drive.

His second interception helped seal the win for Iowa. The Cyclones had driven into Iowa territory, but on 2nd and 8 Brock Purdy threw an ill advised pass to the outside. Hankins was in good position and did not miss his opportunity, securing the interception and returning it deep into Iowa State territory to help put the game out of reach. The Hawkeyes would tack on a field goal as a result of the interception and stretch the lead to 27 – 10 in the fourth quarter.

Hankins took his turn starring at corner in week two, finishing the game with 4 tackles, 2 interceptions and another pass breakup. He showed opponents that avoiding Riley Moss to throw to his side of the field is not a viable strategy against the Iowa defense. Hankins had the best game of his career in a rivalry game against Iowa State. His senior season is off to a fantastic start, as he made the biggest plays in the biggest of games.
