Shazz Preston: Scouting Report
Size
Shazz Preston has average size for a college receiver. He has a lean build now, but has room to fill out as he matures. Preston is big enough to play on the perimeter but could also play out of the slot in college. Though size is not a strength, it’s not an area for concern either.
Athleticism
Preston is a good athlete who displays the top end speed needed to take the top off a defense. He shows good balance and is smooth changing directions. Preston is not as twitchy as some of the more explosive receivers and could stand to improve his burst. Overall, Preston is a smooth athlete who has good speed.
Route Running
Preston is a savvy route runner who displays the ability to work the middle of the field in the short and intermediate passing game. He runs a diverse route tree and his balance and athletic ability helps him run efficient routes. As he improves his explosiveness, Preston will find it easier to put pressure on defensive backs and get separation out of his breaks.
Ball Skills
Preston does an excellent job of tracking the ball downfield. He has an uncanny ability to adjust to the ball and regularly wins in contested situations thanks to his body control and ability to high point the ball. At times Preston can let the ball get into his body when he is open, but overall he is consistent catching the football.
Run After Catch
Preston is very effective after the catch, showing an array of cuts and moves to avoid tacklers. He has a good feel for space and is very shifty working his way towards that space. Preston is difficult to square up in space and makes big plays with the ball in his hands frequently.
Projection
Shazz Preston is a well rounded receiver who has big play potential but can also be a consistent receiver who moves the chains. He is a threat to make a big play after the catch at any time and can hurt a defense in numerous ways. With a complete skill set, Preston will be a good college receiver who is a starter for an upper echelon power five team.
