OG/C Rankings: Cam Jurgens

With the season underway players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Cam Jurgens, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

• The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
• Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
• Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
• We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Nebraska center, Cam Jurgens was recruited as a tight end but has made the switch to center and is thriving at the position. He is the leader of the Nebraska offensive line and one of the keys to Nebraska’s strong play of late. He has been equally proficient as a pass blocker and as a run blocker this year. Jurgens has been a bright spot on an offensive line that has had some issues early this year, but is getting better each week.

Jurgens is a very good athlete who is able to pull and get out in front of the play and block smaller quicker defenders. He has good balance and quickness that help him get around the corner quickly and square up defenders to finish his blocks. He is an excellent lead blocker down field, showing the ability to seal off a defender and then get downfield and take on a second level defender. Jurgens moves so fluidly for an offensive lineman, he still has the athleticism of a tight end but packs the punch of an offensive lineman when he delivers his blocks.

Jurgens is quick to get into his sets in pass protection, as well. He reacts quickly to blitzes and stunts and is able to get leverage on the pass rusher and deliver a good initial punch. He has the side to side agility to stay in front of quicker defensive lineman. Jurgens has gotten noticeably bigger over his career and has improved his strength along the way, anchoring down and holding his own against bigger defensive tackles. He is a powerful and quick center who continues to get better as he gains experience up front.

Cam Jurgens is the keystone of the Nebraska offensive line. He is a versatile blocker who can be effective in multiple blocking schemes, allowing Nebraska to use him in several ways in their running schemes. He can hold up at the point of attack and plays well in the middle of the line, but is excellent out in space where he can use his athleticism. Jurgens has developed his technique and added strength to become one of the best interior offensive lineman in college football.
