Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, Mario Williams committed to Oklahoma, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Mario Williams is an electric prospect as a slot receiver. He is a quick sudden athlete with good speed. Williams has great acceleration and agility, he can change directions quickly and get up to top speed in a hurry. Williams has big play ability downfield, or after the catch on shorter throws. He shows good hands and catches the ball well with his hands away from his body. Williams is quick and explosive which helps him create separation easily, he will get even better in this regard when he learns to set up his routes and adds polish to his game. Williams is electric with the ball in his hand and uses his quick twitch ability and shiftiness to make people miss and pick up big plays. He can be effective downfield, underneath, on screens, or on jet sweeps. Williams’ biggest weakness is his size, he is not tall and is fairly slender now, but has room to add weight. He does run with good strength and is not easy to get to the ground after the catch. With some time to add weight and learn the nuances of the position Mario Williams should be a star our of the slot for the Sooners.
