DE Rankings: Myles Murphy

Last Updated: 08/12/2022

As we review the DE rankings, players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Myles Murphy, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Clemson defensive end, Myles Murphy got off to a fast start in his true freshman season and became one of the most feared defensive ends in college football. Murphy lived up to the high expectations his strong play created during his sophomore season. During the 2021 season, Murphy tallied 38 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 2 fumbles forced and 2 pass breakups. He has stepped into a leadership role for one of the best defensive fronts in college football and is one of the top defensive ends in the game.

Murphy is a powerful defender at end and does an excellent job of holding up on the edge. Murphy is a strong 6’5″ 275 lbs and does a good job of pushing blockers into the backfield. He has long arms and keeps offensive linemen from getting into his body with his length and technique. Murphy is able to rush the passer and defend the run effectively because he presses offensive lineman into the backfield and then disengages them in either direction to reach the quarterback or the ball carrier and make the play.

Murphy’s excellent size is only half of the story, he is also an outstanding athlete who has mobility that is not common for a player his size. He is quick to turn the corner when rushing the passer with the balance and agility to maintain speed and close on the quarterback. Murphy’s agility also allows him make quick countermoves back inside when the quarterback moves up in the pocket or on inside run plays. He is able to get penetration almost at will and forces offenses to adjust their game-plan according to him.

Myles Murphy is an advanced defensive end who has the strength and athleticism to change the game. He does a good job of using his length and hands to control blockers and disengage to make the play. Murphy has become an impact player for the Tigers and is a leader for the Clemson defense. He has continued to develop his game and add to his repertoire, making him one of the best defensive ends in college football.
