CFB Saturdays – What’s New in a Few – 5-10-20
At CFB Saturdays we take a look at some of the latest headlines in College Football. Our goal is to keep College Football Fans up to date on recent happenings from around the nation and some quick analysis.
Florida’s Tough Weekend
The Gators were hoping for some good news this Friday from the top WR in Florida, Jacorey Brooks but Alabama ultimately received his commitment. It appeared Florida had some momentum of late but things quickly changed leading up to the announcement.
Dan Mullen’s team has been great on the field, reaching and winning two New Year’s Six Bowls in the past two seasons. However, the momentum on the recruiting trail has been a step behind. The Gators still signed plenty of talented players, but to take the next step Florida needs to win more of these recruiting battles.
Earlier this week, 2020 commitment and future OT Isaiah Walker announced he would transfer and yesterday announced his transfer to Miami. There is speculation that Walker was homesick but this is the second year in a row where the Gators have lost a highly touted recruit. It may just be a coincidental run of bad luck but the optics are certainly not good.
Mullen has been a tremendous game planner and has produced very good results for what he inherited. He and his staff must match that success with consistency on the recruiting trail for the Gators to reach their potential.
Oregon lands Two in the Trenches
Mario Cristobal continues to recruit and build Oregon from the inside out. The Ducks received a commitment from OT Bram Walden, the number one overall player in the State of Arizona. Walden joins C Jackson Light to form a good base for Oregon’s 2021 offensive line class.
The Ducks also received a commitment from defensive end Terrell Tilmon. Tilmon is not rated as a four star recruit but has the frame and athleticism to develop into a player in Eugene.
Cristobal’s class currently has seven commitments, five of whom are composite four stars. The quality of the class is undeniable and we expect Oregon to sign an excellent class when signing day ultimately comes around.
Arizona State Expected to land Grad Transfer DeAndre Pierce
DeAndre Pierce is expected to announce his transfer from the Boise State Broncos to the Sun Devils in the coming days. Pierce is the son of former NFL LB and current ASU co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce. The younger Pierce has started 21 games for the Broncos but has been severely limited by injuries the past two seasons.
Pierce’s last full season was in 2017 and he was productive recording 83 tackles, 4 TFLs, and an interception. If he can stay healthy he should bolster the depth and talent of the Sun Devils secondary in 2020.
Minnesota Continues to Row the Boat on the Recruiting Trail
The Gophers landed a commitment yesterday from four star RB Mar’Keise Irving of Illinois. Irving is ranked as the 18th best RB in the nation according to the 247sports industry generated composite. Irving becomes the 5th composite four star for the Gophers in the 2021 class and 16th commitment overall.
P.J. Fleck is continuing the momentum gained this season on the recruiting trail. With a strong roster returning in 2020, the Gophers continue to trend up and should be considered one of the top teams in the Big Ten moving forward. The Nation should be paying close attention.
