CB Rankings: Clark Phillips
As we review the CB rankings players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Clark Phillips, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:
- The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
- Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
- Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
- We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Utah cornerback, Clark Phillips wasted little time becoming an impact player for the Utes. He earned playing time as a true freshman and made several big plays for his team during the Covid shortened 2020 season. He continued to shine in 2021, proving to be a shutdown defender during his first full season. Phillips was excellent, tallying 62 tackles, 1 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 13 pass breakups, 2 fumbles forced and scoring a touchdown. Phillips has been every bit the star he was expected to be as a recruit and will continue to shine in 2022.
Phillips has the athletic traits to be a shut-down cornerback. He has quick hips to turn and run with receivers. He makes good adjustments on comeback routes and double moves, staying in the pocket of the receiver. Phillips’ acceleration is evident when he closes on the football, shutting passing windows that appeared to be open. Even if he gives up space on a route, he has the make-up speed to close and make a play where others could not. Athletically, Phillips has everything a cornerback needs to succeed at this level.
The thing that separates Phillips from other corners is his mindset. Phillips has the tenacity and toughness it takes to play defensive back in an era of high powered offenses. He may be just 5’10” 183 lbs, but he plays tougher than that, never backing down from the challenge of taking on bigger receivers. Phillips also never seems to quit on a play, finding ways to chase offensive players down to save a score or even force an unexpected turnover. His drive sets him apart and makes him a star.
Clark Phillips is a leader in the secondary for the Utes. He has the mental toughness to take on all challenges and that attitude is contagious. He is a gifted athlete who has the tools to excel in coverage, making life tough for receivers in man coverage. Phillips is an excellent cornerback who has become one of the best in college football.
