Brenen Thompson: Scouting Report
Size
Brenen Thompson is on the smaller side for a receiver in college. He is a bit shorter than the average receiver and has a slender build. He will be able to add some muscle and fill out, but he does not project to be a big powerful receiver. Thompson is built for speed and though he is not very big, he is tough to get a hand on as well.
Athleticism
Thompson has elite speed and it shows on the football field. He is nearly impossible to get an angle on and shows the acceleration to quickly get to top speed and pull away from defenders. Thompson is a very sudden athlete, who has the lateral quickness to change directions in a hurry and make defenders miss. Thompson is a track star whose athleticism translates onto the football field as well.
Route Running
Thompson has all of the raw skills to get separation easily but needs experience and polish as a route runner. He is a versatile player who receives touches in a variety of ways but will need to learn the nuances of the receiver position as he develops. He should pick it up quickly because he shows the burst, change of direction skills and balance needed to run crisp routes.
Ball Skills
Thompson does a good job of tracking the ball in the air, showing the balance and body control to adjust to the ball and make the catch. Though he is not a big receiver, he has good leaping ability and will fight over defenders to win in jump ball situations. Thompson has good hands and does not fight the ball when he catches it, making smooth catches to convert big plays.
Run After Catch
Thompson’s athleticism makes him a nightmare for defenders to tackle in the open field. In addition to his speed, burst and lateral quickness, Thompson also has good balance and is able to keep his feet in difficult spots. He is able to regain speed instantly and has a nose for open space, where he can put his speed to work.
Projection
Brenen Thompson is a lightning fast receiver who is a big play threat the moment he steps on the field. He has the hands and ability to turn his athletic ability into production on the football field. That athletic ability and football skill will help him develop into an all conference type performer in college.
