Armani Winfield: Scouting Report
Size
Armani Winfield has good height for a receiver and also has the length to be an asset on the outside. He is still a thinner prospect, but his frame has the room to add good weight and he will fill out well over the course of his career. Winfield’s size will be a strength for him in college and allow him to create mismatches against the secondary.
Athleticism
Winfield has a long stride and shows good long speed to get behind the defense. He has a solid first step off the line and accelerates well in the open field. He has above average change of direction ability but will need to continue to work on this area of his game. Winfield has good athleticism overall, particularly for a receiver with his size and frame.
Route Running
Winfield is a difficult match-up because of his size and athletic ability, but he also has a good feel for making himself open. Against smaller defenders he uses his length and size to create a passing lane and against bigger defenders he has the speed to create space. Winfield does need to improve his ability to set up his routes and maintain pace in and out of his breaks.
Ball Skills
Winfield has good concentration and body control, helping him make tough catches in traffic or along the sideline. His size is also an asset in these situation and Winfield makes good use of his large catch radius. He also tracks the ball well on deep balls, adjusting to under-thrown balls to make the play. Winfield is a reliable receiver who can bail his quarterback out at times.
Run After Catch
Winfield has big play speed and his size and strength make him tougher to tackle. He can outrun angles defenders take to contain him and makes big plays after the catch. Winfield is not as sudden and does not make as many defenders miss in tight spaces, but he is a big play threat because he is difficult to contain and get to the ground.
Projection
Armani Winfield is a prototypical receiver who has the size and speed to be a big weapon on the perimeter. He creates mismatches due to his speed and size and has the skills to make the most of those situations. Winfield’s skill set will help him develop into a starter on an upper echelon power five team.
